Tara Striano for House Beautiful.
Having just swapped every appliance in our kitchen for stainless in preparation to list our house, I'm feeling a little pissy about brushed silver finishes at the moment. I saw this double oven in the new issue of House Beautiful and liked it more than Gwyneth Paltrow fancies bowel irrigation (that's some serious like, by the way). It's similar to this bad boy I desperately want for the as-yet-unpurchased Big Rock Candy Mountain house:
Dumplings, are you ready for a sea change in appliance color?

Oh yes! I've never gone for the stainless appliances. My brother in law is a coroner and he always said the stainless finishes remind him of work!
I told some friends of mine I was going to get white appliance when I do my kitchen over and I thought they were going to gag.
I don't mind the white appliances you've shown but, come on, those cabinets should be whiter, right? The color difference makes the appliances look cheap IMHO.
You've piqued my interest in them though.
An Urban Cottage - Great point, Steve. You'd have to be mindful selecting your cabinet color if you go with white appliances, whereas that wouldn't matter with stainless.
I don't know-- I still like the stainless look unless I can have a Le Cornue. Please.
Lane - La Cornue! Every time we pass by Williams-Sonoma, I point to their display model and tell my husband "That's the Rolls-Royce of ranges." He invariably rolls his eyes.
This is kinda what I was thinking white appliances would look like.

I think it's a good idea for a small space not to break it all up into different colors.
An Urban Cottage - That was a smart move, especially with a stove so large in a smaller space.
I like my appliances white. But that's cuz I want them to blend in, not stick out. Also, I barely like shiny silver, so dull stainless is out. Too cold. When I put in the kitchen a year a half ago, I went with a white Capital Culinarian 36" with grill and then cheaped out on a white Whirlpool fridge (which is tucked around a corner, so you don't spend any time staring at it) and a salvaged white double-wide cast iron sink. Copper countertops, copper pendant lights and Rohl Tuscan brass faucet (which is pretty close to a patinated copper). That said, I put in stainless everything in the rental units, because I don't expect other people to get the white thing.
I'm so over stainless. I like black ranges and hoods and paneled refrigerators and dishwashers.
That blue unit is pretty sexy too.
YES! We're building a new house right now and I did white appliances..can't wait!
I could easily do white, again...yes, again, if the material doesn't yellow over time. Every white appliance I have seen becomes dingy off-white.
i am having an affair with my stove, it is black, and big
So, as you may have noticed, I'm an old Yankee. I may have missed the taciturn bit in the gene pool, but the use it up, wear-it-out part is embedded in my DNA. The upgrade fever that HGTV and its sponsors has fobbed off on America has resulted in chronic dissatisfaction with any appliance or countertop more than eight days old---at the expense sometimes of common sense or aesthetics. But I digress. In my kitchen---where the cabinets are 35 years old, the counter tops 30 (and already retro) there sits a gleaming white, 32-year old refrigerator, looking just fine, and still keeping the food admirably cool , and a white range, purchased new for a family summer house in 1961 (the owner's manual, also in fine condition, shows a happy Donna Reed looking-housewife making goo-goo eyes at her new range), and yup, looking and working just fine. And that's where I stand on white appliance love. Don't think there haven't been moments that I haven't been nearly seduced by temptress brushed steel (it's gorgeous stuff, but I always regained my senses. If either appliance ever wears out, then we'll talk.
Ask me about granite counter tops sometime. I've got loads to say on that subject.
PS---In interest of full disclosure, I designed a nice crisp un-corny farmhouse kitchen for a friend a couple of years ago---black and brushed steel appliances, brushed steel back splash, black counter tops (FORMICA yet!!! You heard it here)
Anything works if the design is good and an idea is well carried out---although my mother did regret her Avocado appliance era. As she should have.
oh yea! that royal blue is workin its charm on this lady.. love that.
Absolutely yes to white appliances! I had my eye on a pretty white LG fridge I saw at Lowes or Home Depot. The update was in the finish - it was shiny, like glass. So pretty.

Have white appliances ever been out of style?
I once wished for something other than white appliances and ,let me tell you, I am rueing that day. I now have mostly black appliances and a stainless dishwasher. They may be stainless but they are nearly impossible to keep spotless. I hate them and promise to cherish any white appliance in my future.
I love the stainless without apology. It makes things feel very machine-like to me, and I like that. I'm not opposed to hiding things behind cabinet panels though, especially the dishwasher.
That said, I think DED is right, anything can work in the right design.
I have never been a fan of stainless either. I'm with Steve (Urban Cottage) - either white, if you have white cabinets (they should be equally white) or, in my case I went with black, because my cabinets are a dark (almost walnut like) wood finish. The dark appliances blend right into the background in my kitchen. I would however make an exception and do something more colorful if I could afford one of those beautiful Vikings!
Big Yes for white appliances so chic. Got my eye on your next posts.
Always a treat to find the literary crumbs of DED. I'm with David on this. I'm a cook and I like hard-working surfaces. In my kitchen that's in transformation now the counters will be a mix of stainless steel and maple butcher block. In my kitchen function comes first, form comes second. In fact, I'm using Gladiator tool boxes to from my kitchen island...because that's the way we roll around here. Not having to worry about resale, is a very freeing idea!
I love white appliances, stainless leaves me cold. I always think that people buy stainless because it makes them feel like they have a professional kitchen, but they are hard to keep clean.
